Pierson Vocational High School’s Ramiro Castillo entered school last year as an English Language Learner (ELL) student but quickly rose to become so proficient in English that he passed the AZELLA test which measures English proficiency as well as the AzMerit state assessment for geometry – given in English.

Castillo was honored at the Nogales Unified School District’s governing board meeting March 9, 2018 because of his noteworthy accomplishments, said Supt. Fernando Parra.

“After one year he was able to be reclassified,” Parra said, adding that Castillo embodies the possibilities of those who face challenges as a second language learner but who are determined to succeed.  To be reclassified means that the student has mastered English to the extent that he or she no longer is designated as an ELL student.

Castillo will be able to reach his goal of graduating this year, Parra added, saying that this in and of itself is a major accomplishment.

“He is a role model for students and for teachers,” Parra added saying Castillo has expressed the goal of studying nursing.
