Nogales Unified School District began honoring an educator at governing board meetings last year, but at a recent meeting started a new tradition by also honoring a deserving student.

The first recipient was Nogales High School’s salutatorian Luis Alcaraz who has been accepted to numerous top-rated universities including Stanford and Columbia. Alcaraz is an International Baccalaureate candidate and active in a number of extra-curricular activities including working with younger students and with the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club. He is in three honors societies and is passionate about math, Supt. Fernando Parra said.

“Few students have the luxury of choosing where to go,” Parra said. “Luis is not one of them.”

Alcaraz, who thanked his mother Emma and the NHS teachers and administrators, said he is choosing to go to Stanford because he wants to invent something and to start his own business.

“Stanford is the right school for me,” he said, adding that he plans to major in engineering with a business minor.
